Percentile Formula for Grouped Data

Information :

Be = Bottom of Edge

F_i = Sum frequency before ith percentile data

f_i = Frequency of the ith percentile data

c = Class Length

P_i = Percentile ith

i = 1,2, ... ,99

Example :

Please determine the 50th percentile of the data in the table below !

Answer :

n = 8 + 10 + 13 + 17 + 14 + 11 + 7 = 80

the location of the 5th percentile = Location data : (5(80 + 1)/100)

the location of the 5th percentile = Location data : (5(81)/100)

the location of the 5th percentile = Location data : (50(81)/100)

the location of the 5th percentile = Location data : (405/100)

the location of the 5th percentile = Location data : 40,5

So the frequency of 5th percentile = 17

f₅₀ = 17

Be = 45 - 0,5 = 44.5

F₅₀ = 8 + 10 + 13 = 31

c = 35 - 30 = 5

So the 50th percentile of the data is 47.15.
