Types Of Quadratic Equations Roots

Types of Quadratic Equations Roots

If we look at how to find a solution of quadratic equations using a formula, the types of roots will depend on b2 - 4ac. Therefore, b2 - 4ac is called discriminant or differentiator and is usually abbreviated to D where D = b2- 4ac.

Here are some possible root types of quadratic equations, such as:

  • If D > 0 but not pure square, the quadrate equation has two different roots;
  • If D = 0, then the quadratic equation has two rill roots or often called twin roots;
  • If D < 0, then the quadratic equation has no rill root (imaginary root);
  • If D is pure square, then the quadratic equation has different rational roots.

Example:
Investigate the type of roots from x2 + 4x + 4 = 0 without searching for the root first!

Answer:
From x2 + 4x + 4 = 0, obtained:
a = 1
b = 4
c = 4

D = b2 - 4ac
D = 42 - 4(1)(4)
D = 16 - 16
D = 0

Since D = 0, then x2 + 4x + 4 = 0 has the same or twin roots.
